Guy Kawasaki Biography
Guy Kawasaki is a marketing specialist, author, and Silicon Valley venture capitalist. He popularized the Big Idea of Evangelism Marketing as an “Apple evangelist” and the concepts of evangelism marketing.
In his books “The Art of the Start” and “How to Drive Your Competition Crazy,” Kawasaki proposes that the driving force behind evangelism marketing is the fact that individuals want to make the world a better place. Kawasaki has also written several books that have become influential in Silicon Valley and Venture Capitalism.
Guy Kawasaki’s Big Idea: Evangelism Marketing
Guy Kawasaki, the former chief evangelist of Apple Computer, is considered the father of Evangelism Marketing. Evangelism Marketing is a form of word-of-mouth marketing in which companies develop customers who believe so strongly in a particular product or service that they freely try to convince others to buy and use it. Evangelist customers spread their recommendations and recruit new customers out of pure belief, not for money.
Evangelist customers often become vital influencers. The fact that evangelists are not paid or associated with any company makes their beliefs perceived by others as credible and trustworthy. An example is the Harley Owners Groups (HOGS), which connects bikers locally and globally through meetings held all over the world.
There are three types of marketing in this form:
- Evangelism Marketing which applies to any product.
- Technology Evangelism is the evangelism marketing of technology or tool.
- Platform Evangelism is the evangelism marketing to create complementary products and services for the platform’s commercial ecosystem to maximize network effects.

- Born: Guy Takeo Kawasaki was born in 1954 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
- High School: Guy Kawasaki attended ʻIolani School in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi and graduated in 1972.
- Psychology: Kawasaki graduated from Stanford University in 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology.
- Law School: Kawasaki attended law school, but quit after about a week of classes when he realized that he hated law school.
- MBA: Guy Kawasaki earned an MBA degree in 1977 from UCLA Anderson School of Management.
- Apple: Kawasaki, in 1983, joined Apple, where he was Apple’s chief evangelist for four years.
- ACI: In 1987, Kawasaki was hired to lead ACIUS, the U.S. subsidiary of France-based ACI, which published an Apple database software system. Kawasaki left ACIUS in 1989 to further his writing and speaking career.
- Writing: In the early 1990s, Kawasaki wrote columns that were featured in Forbes and MacUser magazines.
- Founder: Kawasaki founded Fog City Software, which was eventually acquired by Symantec.
- Apple Fellow: Kawasaki returned to Apple as an Apple Fellow in 1995.
- Venture Capital: In 1998, he co-founded Garage Technology Ventures, a venture capital firm.
- VC Investments: His VC invested in Pandora Radio, Tripwire, The Motley Fool, and D.light Design.
- Founder: Kawasaki He is also founded several companies such as Truemors and Alltop.
- Google: Kawasaki joined Google as an advisor to Motorola.
- Canva: Kawasaki became the chief evangelist of Canva in 2014.
- Wikimedia: Kawasaki joined Wikimedia Foundation’s board of trustees from 2015 -2016.
- Mercedes-Benz: Kawasaki is a brand ambassador for Mercedes-Benz.
- UC Berkeley: Kawasaki is an executive fellow of the Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley.
- Family: Kawasaki and his wife Beth have four children. Two of which were adopted from Guatemala.
