Michael Gerber Biography
Michael E. Gerber (born 1936) is an author and founder of Michael E. Gerber Companies, a business skills training company. Gerber has been named as the “World’s Number One Small Business Guru” by Inc. Magazine for his “E-Myth” series of books.
Michael Gerber’s ‘Big Idea’ is that “most small business owners work in their business rather than on their business,” a theme that he builds on in his bestselling book called “The E-Myth.”
Michael Gerber – Big Idea: The E-Myth
Michael Gerber’s bestselling book called “The E-Myth” is that most small business owners work IN their business rather than ON their business. Michael Gerber’s Big Ideas in “The E-Myth” are:
- Fatal Assumption: The Fatal Assumption is that if one understands the technical work of a business, it does not follow that they know the business model required to do that professional work in a profitable, sustainable, and leveraged model.
- Entrepreneurial Seizure: The Entrepreneurial Seizure is the moment a technical person working for someone else decides it would be a great idea to start their own business. The technician or professional suffering under someone else takes the work they love to do and turn it into a job, where they become self-employed, but still, only have a job.
- Work IN their Business: Most small business owners work IN their business rather than ON their business.
- Work ON their Business: “Everybody who goes into business needs to be three-people-in-one: The Entrepreneur, The Manager, and The Technician.”
- Entrepreneur: “The Entrepreneur is the innovator, the grand strategist, the creator of new methods for penetrating or creating new markets.”
- Manager: The Manager is pragmatic. Without the Manager, there would be no planning, no order, no predictability.
- Technician: “The Technician is the doer.”
- How: To start to work ON your business rather than IN it, one needs to ask the following questions:
- How can I get my business to work, without me?
- How can I systematize my business so that it could be replicated and scaled?
The key message from “The E Myth” is that most entrepreneurs are merely technicians or professionals with an entrepreneurial seizure. Most entrepreneurs fail because they work IN their business rather than ON their business.

“With no clear picture of how you wish your life to be, how on earth are you going to live it?”
“Drastic change creates estrangement from the self, and generates a need for a new birth of a new identity.”

“I believe it’s true that the difference between great people and everyone else is that great people create their lives actively, while everyone else is created by their lives, passively waiting to see where life takes them next.”
“The work we do is a reflection of who we are. If we’re sloppy at it, it’s because we’re sloppy inside. If we’re late at it, it’s because we’re late inside. If we’re bored by it, it’s because we’re bored inside, with ourselves, not with the work. The most menial work can be a piece of art when done by an artist. So the job here is not outside of ourselves, but inside of ourselves. How we do our work becomes a mirror of how we are inside.”

The problem with most failing businesses is not that their owners don’t know enough about finance, marketing, management, and operations – they don’t, but those things are easy enough to learn – but that they spend their time and energy defending what they think they know.”
